Course: AKM  Metropolis and the Public Sphere

Description:
The course focuses on urbanization and the environment in megacities, charts the historical evolution of rural-urban populations and pinpoints northern-southern differences. Issues such as “poverty and wealth” and “gentrification and Business Improvement Districts” are covered. Planned excursions include visits to the Institut für Zukunftsstudien und Technologiebewertung and Panoramapunkt Potsdamer Platz.

•    Urbanization and the environment in megacities
•    Historical evolution of rural-urban populations, northern-southern hemisphere similarities and differences
•    Poverty and wealth
•    Gentrification und Business Improvement Districts (BID)
•    UN Habitat
Excursions to:
•    Institut für Zukunftsstudien und Technologiebewertung
•    Panoramapunkt Potsdamer Platz
•    Futur 2- Stiftung Zukunftsfähigkeit (Potsdam)
Final exam: Oral exam

Time:
Introduction on 4 April starting at 9.30am.
